There are currently more than 600 homeless children
in Beaufort County.
In South Carolina, there are about 4000 kids in foster care. The average South Carolina foster care child spends about 18 months in the system, but many spend more than 5 years in foster care. The vast majority have been placed there for neglect, physical or sexual abuse, or parental substance abuse. In South Carolina, over 60% of kids move foster homes at least once, some moving as often as four or more times, sometimes being forced to attend different schools in the same year.
The SC Suitcase project collects Suitcases and Backpacks for children in foster care, in shelters, or homeless kids. Having a way to transport belongings in a real suitcase and the dignity of not using a garbage bag can have an impact. Many kids go to school with their books and supplies in a grocery bag. We are working with organizations in SC, including the Department of Social Services, to get your donation to those who need it most.
