Frequently asked questions

What motivated you to start this?

We watched the movie Instant Family and were surprised to learn that foster kids traveled from home to home with their belongings in a garbage bag. We thought this shouldn’t be that hard of a problem to fix.

How have you gotten all of this together?
We starting by reaching out to people we thought might guide us in this process. When we got in touch with the South Carolina Department of Social Services, they were so enthusiastic about the idea that we just knew it was something we wanted to do. We also needed some help from our parents to buy websites and such, but we created the site on our own.

What do you want the project to grow into?
We are calling it the SOUTH CAROLINA Suitcase Project. We are starting small, just the lowcountry for now, but over the next three years we are hoping to expand into the entire state. Our goal was for every South Carolina foster child to have their own suitcase and backpack. Hopefully, we can find like minded students all over the state to help out. We have also started to contact people we know in other states like Wisconsin to try to start local suitcase projects there.

How many suitcases have been donated?
In the first month we received over 100 suitcases. When people hear that we are not asking for money, but rather simply asking them to go into their attic to see if they have a gently used suitcase or backpack they no longer need, they want to participate. We have also received many brand new suitcases and backpacks. We now believe we have collected more than a couple thousand suitcases, bags and backpacks.

How do I prepare my suitcase before donating it to The Suitcase Project?
Empty out all sections and pockets. Remove any stickers and identifying information.

Are you still accepting donations during the Covid-19 Pandemic?
We are. We have been unable to do donation events, but depending upon your location, we can come to you or meet you. It has been difficult finding places to donate during Covid, so we have slowed down some on deliveries.

Where can we donate?
Shoot us an email and we will let you know if we have a collection event coming up, or we can come pick up your donation!
